English Corner: Work in Plural?

Macam biasa.... Pada time2 busy prepare report untuk Audit Committee, aku akan selalu la tengok dictionary plus buat sikit research pasal grammar kat internet nie...

Maklum la, english lemah... x macam best friend aku si Zue tuh.... ppeerrgghh!!! kalau dia bercakap in english, boleh meleleh taik telinga....

ok, since aku busy prepare report, plus tiba2 ade comments masuk kat blog aku.... Comment from Miss Cloudy regarding 'work' and 'works'. (sile refer: http://bubblyriz.blogspot.com/2011/12/english-oh-english.html#comment-form)

Miss Cloudy seem not agreed with my friend's comments which mengatakan 'jangan put 's' for work yang bersifat plural...

So, aku pun terpaksa la buat sikit research on that matter... ye la, kalau dah ade disagreement/discrepency, aku rasa aku patut amik tau apa yang salah and apa yang betul.....

ok, lets start our lesson....

Setelah disiasat dengan lebih lanjut, barulah aku tau yang work and works nie bergantung pada cirinya yang 'countable' or 'uncountable'...

Setelah mencari beberapa articles, comments, discussion and notes.... (including link yang Miss Cloudy bagi kat aku)... aku dapati Sandhya Pentareddy's explaination lagi mudah nak faham....

According to Sandhya Pentareddy (through her FB note: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=183022125066682):

"Normally, work is not countable into individual items. For such things that are not normally countable (water, understanding, information, wood etc.), we use singular and not plural for the noun form.

As work is generally not countable into individual items, we use the singular form for 'work' as a noun. But there are some exceptions to this where we use the countable noun form of work which is “works”:

Exception 1:
We consider literary, artistic or intellectual properties as countable. This may be because they are very special and distinguished. For these, we use "Works" as the plural form.
Ex:
A. "Rome has many works of Da Vinci".
B. "These works of art are amazing".
C. "Generations have fallen in love with the literary works of Shakespeare". D. "The works of God or evil".
E. "Righteous works".

Exception 2: Places of establishment of work. Ex: Ironworks

Exception 3: Informal: "It's a car with the works". This one is related to the category 1 above."

So....
Kalau nak lebih detail pasal 'WORK' nie... boleh jugak la visit http://www.thefreedictionary.com/work ....

- mula2 tuh aku refer 'manual' dictionary.... ppeerrgghh 3/4 pages cerita pasal work (noun) nie.....
nasib baik teringat kat internet kan ade dictionary gak... free lagi....

Dictionary kesayangan aku... aku guna since form 4....

Panjang kan explaination pasal work nie... lebih 3/4 mukasurat....

My conclusion, English nie memang complicated.... kengkadang x logik pun ade gak.... aku ngan adik aku pun ade la jugak kutuk2 pasal 'mat saleh' yang menyusahkan orang nie.... ye la kalau bahasa melayu senang gile.... kalau nak tunjuk bende tuh banyak, ko letak jer la kata ganda.... huahahahaha.. kan senang tuh.... logik pun logik....
